Helmet and Eye Protection

Before an ATV or snowmobile may be operated in Maine, the vehicle must have the required equipment and and riders should be dressed for the activity.

  • All ATV and snowmobile operators under 18 years of age must wear a helmet. Helmets must meet or exceed the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) FMVSS No. 218 specifications and have a safety-approved label from the DOT.
  • While not mandated by law, ATV and snowmobile operators should also wear eye protection, even if the vehicle is equipped with a windshield or screen.
