Course Outline

Here are the age and education requirements to operate in Maine:

  • A person under 10 years of age may not operate an ATV.1
  • A person 10 years of age or older but under 16 years of age may not operate an ATV unless that person has successfully completed a training course approved by the department and is accompanied by an adult.
  • Proof of having completed a training course must be presented for inspection upon request of a law enforcement officer.
  • A person under 16 years of age may not cross a public way maintained for travel, with the exception that a properly registered ATV may be operated on a public way only the distance necessary, but in no case to exceed 500 yards, on the extreme right of the traveled way for the purpose of crossing, as directly as possible, a public way, bridge, overpass, underpass, sidewalk, or culvert as long as that operation can be made safely and does not interfere with traffic approaching from either direction on the public way, provided that:
    1. The driver has proof of successful completion of an approved ATV safety course and...
    2. The driver is under the supervision of and accompanied by an adult.

1. The requirements above do not apply to the operation of an ATV on:

  • The land on which the operator is living
  • Land owned or leased by the operator's parent or guardian; or
  • A safety training site approved by the department.
