Do you need Wisconsin ATV/OHM education?

To operate an ATV or OHM on Wisconsin public riding areas, you must be at least 12 years old and possess valid proof of course completion.

Planning to operate an ATV? You need safety education if you were born on or after Jan. 1, 1988.

Planning to operate an OHM? You need safety education if you were born after Jan. 1, 1998.

Note: If you have already completed a Wisconsin ATV safety course but want to ride an off-highway motorcycle (OHM) on public trails, you must first complete the free OHM Short Course. You may take the OHM Short Course only if you already have ATV safety certification.

Is the Wisconsin Offroad Ed Course approved by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources?

The Wisconsin Offroad Ed Course is approved and accepted by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

Is my Wisconsin Offroad Safety Certificate accepted elsewhere?

Most states and provinces that have mandatory education requirements will accept the Offroad Safety Certificate. (This is known as “reciprocity.”) If you plan to operate in another state or province, make sure you check their reciprocity laws before doing so.

Quizzes and/or Exams

I failed a unit quiz. Have I failed the course?

If you fail a unit quiz, you must restudy the unit and take the quiz again until you pass. You must score at least 80% on the unit quizzes to pass.

Do I have to take an online exam?

The Certification Exam is the exam you take at the end of the online course. You must score at least 80% on the exam to pass. You have unlimited attempts to pass the exam. If you don’t complete the exam in one session, don’t worry. When you log in later, you will be taken to the first unanswered question of the exam.

About Your Certification

What is the proof of online Wisconsin Offroad Ed Course completion?

Once you pass and pay for the online course, you will be able to immediately print out the Temporary ATV/OHM Safety Certificate. This is your proof of online course completion. You can print the Temporary ATV/OHM Safety Certificate right then, and/or request that a PDF be emailed to you. This certificate EXPIRES 60 days after course completion.

What is the permanent Wisconsin Offroad Safety Certificate?

The Offroad Safety Certificate is proof that you have successfully completed all the education requirements. The Offroad Safety Certificate will be available to print from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources website after the first day of the next month.
