What Is a UTV?

According to Wisconsin law, a utility-terrain vehicle (UTV) is a commercially designed and manufactured vehicle that:

• Has a dry weight of less than 3,000 pounds or less and…
• Is 65 inches in width or less and…
• Is designed to travel on four or more tires and…
• Has a steering wheel and…
• Has two headlights, a taillight, and a brake light and…
• Has a roll bar or a similar structural system or device and…
• Has a seat belt for the operator and each passenger.

This definition includes a small UTV—a utility-terrain vehicle that meets the definition of a UTV and that has an engine certified by the manufacturer at not more than 200 cubic centimeters or an equivalent power unit.

A UTV is also any machine that:
