Course Outline

As a representative of the ORV community, you must be respectful of private property and never trespass upon land owned by another person. Just because you see tracks, it does not necessarily mean you can go there. Always check before operating off of the designated trail system. A person may not operate an ORV in the following circumstances without permission:

  • On any farmland or open field.
  • On any posted or fenced private property.
  • On any private property without written permission from the owner.
  • On land owned by a utility company; this includes Consumers Energy property.
  • On railroad or railroad right-of-way property. Additionally, a person may only cross railroad tracks at a designated road crossing.

Trespassing on private property is a misdemeanor violation in Michigan. Penalties range from court fines to possible jail. Violators could also be ordered by the court to pay for any ecological damages that result from trespassing. When in doubt, always stay on a designated trail.
