The muffler and exhaust system on OHRVs and snowmobiles must meet applicable sound-level standards. It is illegal to modify the exhaust system on an OHRV or a snowmobile to increase the noise level above the level of the original muffler.

OHRVs

The noise level must not exceed 96 decibels on the A scale when tested according to the provisions of SAE J1287.

When operating in woodland areas, OHRVs that emit exhaust within four feet of the ground also must be equipped with a spark arrestor.

Snowmobiles

The noise level must not exceed 82 decibels on the A scale when tested according to the provisions of SAE J2567.

Any snowmobile manufactured after February 1, 2007, must display “SSCC Certified” on the exhaust system’s silencer and the outer surface of the exhaust silencer assembly. The letters must be:

  • Legible and...
  • At least 4 mm (320 inch) high and...
  • Visible to an observer without having to detach or dismantle any parts and...
  • Affixed so that they cannot be removed, replaced, or altered.
