The muffler and exhaust system on OHRVs and snowmobiles must meet applicable sound-level standards. It is illegal to modify the exhaust system on an OHRV or a snowmobile to create more noise than a stock muffler would allow.

OHRVs

The noise level must not exceed 96 dB(A) when tested according to the provisions of the SAE J1287 test.

When operating in woodland areas, OHRVs that emit exhaust within four feet of the ground also must be equipped with a spark arrestor.

Snowmobiles

If the vehicle was manufactured between January 2, 1973, and June 30, 1978, inclusive, the noise level must not exceed 82 dB(A) when tested according to the provisions of the SAE J192a test.

If the vehicle was manufactured on or after July 1, 1978, the noise level must not exceed 73 dB(A) when tested according to the provisions of the SAE J1161 test.
