Course Outline

The muffler and exhaust system on OHRVs and snowmobiles must meet applicable sound-level standards. It is illegal to modify the exhaust system on an OHRV or a snowmobile to increase the noise level above the level of the original muffler.

OHRVs

The noise level must not exceed 96 decibels on the A scale when tested according to the provisions of SAE J-1287.

When operating in woodland areas, OHRVs that emit exhaust within four feet of the ground also must be equipped with a spark arrestor.

Snowmobiles

The noise level must not exceed 82 decibels on the A scale when tested according to the provisions of SAE J-2567.

Any snowmobile manufactured after February 1, 2007, must display “SSCC Certified” on the exhaust system’s silencer and the outer surface of the exhaust silencer assembly. The letters must be:

  • Legible and...
  • At least 4 mm (3/20 inch) high and...
