Examples of an ATV, OHM, and a UTV

According to Montana law, an OHV is a self-propelled vehicle used for recreation or cross-country travel on public roads, trails, easements, lakes, rivers, or streams.

  • OHVs include, but are not limited to, motorcycles, ATVs, dune buggies, amphibious vehicles, air-cushion vehicles, and other forms of land transportation that are powered by a means other than muscle or wind.
  • OHVs do not include:
    • Snowmobiles and other vehicles designed primarily for travel on snow
    • Boats and other vessels designed primarily for travel on water
    • Vehicles that are licensed under other Montana laws such as sport utility vehicles and 4x4 trucks
