Reducing ATV Environmental Impact

Noise

• The right to ride an ATV doesn't permit us to infringe on the peaceful enjoyment of others. ATV riding is a privilege. Abuse of this privilege by a few has led to additional restrictions or outright loss of riding areas.
• ATV users always must show concern for their noise level, especially when using ATV routes for gas, food, and lodging. The privilege of an ATV route often can be eliminated by a simple majority vote of the local jurisdiction.
• It is suggested that whenever you are traveling an ATV route, you shift up at least one gear in order to keep revolutions per minute (rpm) and exhaust noise to minimums.

Dust

When traveling on an ATV route, be concerned about the dust you create with your ATV, especially in residential areas.

• Adjust to a slower speed if necessary to keep dust creation to a minimum.
• ATVs must slow to 10 mph or less when within 150 feet of a dwelling.

Speed

Protect the privilege of the ATV route by not exceeding the posted or legal speed.

Ordinary High Water Mark (OHWM)

The OHWM is usually described as a stain on the rocks and trees along the shoreline of a waterway. This marks where the highest water level usually is. The OHWM also can be indicated by a change of vegetation type.

• No vehicles may operate in any areas below the OHWM.
• These areas are very important to aquatic ecosystems.
• These areas can be easily damaged by ATVs.
• All exposed shorelines and lakebeds are below the OHWM.

Reduce the Spread of Noxious Weeds

Weed seeds lodge in tires and caked-on mud. To prevent the spread of weeds, wash your ATV after every ride.

Be a Wise Energy User

• Drive slowly for the first few minutes to let the engine warm up.
• Operate at lower speeds to help conserve fuel.
• Keep your engine tuned correctly to get maximum mileage.
• Use trails closest to your home to minimize transportation costs.
