Preparing for Riding Practice
Before you do any serious off-road riding, you need to find a safe, unchallenging location to practice riding your new ORV and get comfortable operating it. It’s a good idea to walk the area first to make sure there aren’t any unseen hazards that could trap tires, such as dips and holes.
Terrain: Ideally, the location should be about 100 feet by 300 feet (approximately the size of a football field) and include two types of terrain:
- A flat area without any obstacles
- A hilly area that’s not too steep and is easy to climb on foot.
Equipment: Bring a tape measure and a half-dozen markers to set up areas for specific exercises. The markers can be plastic cones or containers, cans, small rocks, or whatever you can find. To keep the wind from moving a light container, you may need to fill it with dirt. Do not use glass or any other object that will shatter or cause damage if you accidentally run over it.
Safe Riding Habits: To ensure safety during your practice exercises, use the same procedures and safety measures you would use for serious off-road riding.
- Make sure younger operators practice under the direct visual supervision of an adult.
- Do not practice alone. Bring an experienced rider who can help you improve your skills or assist in an emergency.
- Be sure the course is free of obstacles and hazards.
- Maintain a safe speed at all times.
- Don’t use alcohol or drugs.
- Wear proper clothing and safety gear, which must include a DOT–approved crash helmet and approved eye protection.
Practice Your Riding Skills
Before You Begin
- Perform a Pre-Ride Inspection: Using your owner’s manual, find and check all of the items listed in “Inspecting Your ORV Before You Ride” in Chapter One.
- Practice the Correct Riding Posture: With the engine off, mount your ORV and sit with your eyes fixed on the trail ahead. Be sure you can reach each control and operate it comfortably.
- Practice the Shift Pattern: Your ORV’s shift pattern is described in the owner’s manual. With the engine off, practice shifting through that pattern.
