Observing the Code of Safety
-
Your Vehicle and Your Gear
- Maintain the mechanical condition of your vehicle. Recheck it periodically.
- Know the basic operating procedures for your vehicle. Read the owner’s manual so that you’ll be familiar with its capabilities.
- Wear protective clothing suitable for the terrain and weather.
- Use a helmet and goggles (or face shield).
- Make sure the lights work properly.
- Don’t remove the factory-installed air box or muffler.
- Your Environment
- Be familiar with the type of terrain in the area.
- Remember that trail conditions can change due to elevation, terrain, and weather.
- Check weather reports before you leave, and recheck them periodically while you’re riding. If ice or snow is forecast, you need to know.
- Respect any people and animals you encounter.
- Never venture out alone.
- Adjusting for Darkness
- Slow down and watch for others at night or in low-light conditions.
- Be cautious on overcast days.
- Establish a point of reference when riding on large, open fields after dark. Estimating distances and direction of travel may be difficult.
