What to Expect When Taking the Course
Learning Step by Step
This official training program is developed to meet the standards for OHV rider safety education established by the state of Massachusetts.
To help you improve your off-roading skills and to prepare you for the final exam, the course is broken down into 8 easy-to-understand units that you can complete at your own pace:
- Unit 1: Preparing to Ride
- Unit 2: Learning to Ride
- Unit 3: Basic Riding Skills
- Unit 4: Improving Your Riding
- Unit 5: Riding Safely and Responsibly
- Unit 6: Preparing for the Unexpected

Read each unit. The units are organized to form building blocks of information. Each unit will help you understand the information in the next units.
As you progress through the course, you’ll be given the opportunity to demonstrate how well you’re understanding the offroad safety topics by taking a quiz at the end of each of the 8 units.
You’ll need to score 80% or greater on the unit quiz before moving on to the next unit. If you don’t pass a unit quiz, don’t worry. You’ll just go back and study the unit again until you’re ready to pass.
After completing all units, you’ll proceed directly to the online Final Exam.
You must score 80% or greater on the final exam to pass. If you fail the final exam, there is no penalty. You can retake the exam as many times as you like until you pass.
After completing the online course, your Massachusetts OHV Safety Education Certificate will arrive by mail in 2-3 weeks. (You’ll use the OHV Course Completion Certificate until your permanent card arrives.)
