It's the Law—Iowa's Off-Road Vehicle Laws
Required Equipment on ATVs

  • Head Lamp and Tail Lamp: Every ATV operated from sunset to sunrise shall display a lighted head lamp and tail lamp.
  • Brakes: Every ATV shall be equipped with brakes which conform to standards prescribed by the director of transportation.
  • Mufflers: ATVs and motorcycles may not exceed an engine noise limit above 96 decibels as tested under SAE J1287.
