Observing the Code of Safety

Your Vehicle and Your Gear

  • Be sure your vehicle is in good mechanical condition.
  • Familiarize yourself with your vehicle by reading your owner’s manual.
  • Wear protective clothing suitable for the environment.
  • Use a DOT–approved helmet with goggles or a face shield to prevent injuries from twigs and debris.
  • Make sure your OHV’s lighting system is working properly.
  • Don’t remove the factory-installed air box, muffler, or spark arrestor.

Your Environment

  • Know the terrain where you plan to operate.
  • Remember that trail conditions can change due to elevation, terrain, time of year, use, and weather.
  • Be aware of the weather forecast, particularly extreme heat as well as ice and snow conditions.
  • Respect any people and animals you encounter.
  • Never venture out alone.
  • Don’t ride on high pollution advisory (HPA) days.
