Alerting Yourself to the Causes of Off-Road Accidents

The following are leading causes of injury and fatal accidents.

  • Driving an ATV on a paved surface. ATVs are designed for off-road use only and handle poorly on pavement.
  • Riding double on an ATV that isn’t designed to carry a passenger. Most ATVs are designed for only one rider.
  • Riding alone.
  • Letting inexperienced operators ride without an experienced riding partner or group.
  • Riding without adequate supervision.
  • Attempting dangerous stunts and maneuvers.
  • Operating in unfamiliar areas or terrain.
  • Failing to observe state laws and local ordinances.
  • Operating beyond your abilities and your machine’s capabilities.
Remember...

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, during the first month of operating an ATV, an inexperienced rider is 13 times more likely to have an accident than an experienced rider. It is the owner’s responsibility to ensure that young or inexperienced operators receive proper instruction prior to operation.

Preventing Accidents

  • Take an OHV safety course.
  • Supervise young and/or inexperienced operators.
  • Wear a Department of Transportation–approved helmet with goggles.
  • Check the weather before riding.
  • Don’t cross frozen water.
  • Never travel alone.
  • Tell a friend or family member about any long trips. Leave behind a copy of your travel plan, a map of the area, and a time schedule.
  • Never use drugs or alcohol while operating.
  • Learn and observe Arizona laws, local ordinances, and/or the local land management agency’s rules and regulations.
Remember...

OHV operators are sometimes criticized for making excessive noise. All OHVs must have a muffler and spark arrestor in good working condition.
